Dashain 2083 Date — दशैं २०८३ | All 15 Days, Tika Time & Complete Guide

Dashain 2083 BS (Bada Dashain 2026) starts on Sunday, October 11, 2026 with Ghatasthapana (Ashwin 25, 2083 BS) and ends on Sunday, October 25, 2026 with Kojagrat Purnima (Kartik 8, 2083 BS). The festival spans 15 days.

The most important day — Vijaya Dashami (Dashain Tika) — falls on Wednesday, October 21, 2026 (Kartik 4, 2083 BS). The auspicious tika muhurat confirmed by the Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Samiti (NPNS) is 11:53 AM Nepal Standard Time (NST).

Why is Dashain so late in 2083? Because of Mala Maas (Adhik Maas) — an intercalary month that fell between Jestha 3 and Ashadh 1 (May 17 – June 15, 2026) in 2083 BS. This extra month pushed Dashain approximately one month later than in previous years. Use our date converter to verify any Dashain date.

Mala Maas Effect — Why Dashain 2083 is Late

In 2083 BS, an extra intercalary month (Adhik Maas) was inserted between Jestha 3 – Ashadh 1 (May 17 – Jun 15, 2026). This pushed Dashain from its usual September slot to October 11–25, 2026. Convert any date →

🙏 Dashain Rituals — Day by Day Guide

1
Ghatasthapana — Planting Jamara
On Day 1, a sacred clay pot (Kalash) filled with holy water, flowers and banyan leaves is established in the prayer room. Barley seeds are planted in a basket of soil and placed in darkness so they grow pale yellow. These shoots — called Jamara — symbolise prosperity and will be used as blessings on Tika day.
2
Daily Puja — 9 Days of Durga Worship
For the nine days of Navaratri, families perform daily puja (worship) to Goddess Durga in her nine forms. Special prayers, offerings of fruits and flowers, and the reading of Durga Saptashati are common. Temples across Nepal see large gatherings of devotees.
3
Phulpati — Procession of Sacred Offerings
On Day 7, a grand procession (historically from Gorkha Palace) brings sacred items — banana trees, sugarcane stalks, Jamara, flowers and a ceremonial jar — to Kathmandu's Hanuman Dhoka palace. The army performs a 31-gun salute. Families bring flowers to their home shrine.
4
Maha Ashtami & Maha Navami — Sacrifice Days
On Days 8 and 9, animal sacrifices are made to Goddess Kali and Durga at major temples. Families offer buffaloes, goats, ducks and chickens. The meat is cooked as Prasad and shared with the family. Kal Ratri (the night of Day 8) is considered the most powerful night of the year.
5
Vijaya Dashami — Tika & Jamara (Main Day)
The most celebrated day. At the auspicious muhurat (11:53 AM NST in 2083), elders apply red Tika (a mixture of rice, yogurt and red powder) and golden Jamara on the foreheads of younger family members while giving blessings. Children receive Dakshina (cash gifts). Families feast on goat meat curry. Tika giving continues for 5 days so all family members can participate.
6
Kojagrat Purnima — The Full Moon End
On the final night, people stay awake under the full moon and light oil lamps and candles throughout the house. It is believed that Goddess Laxmi visits homes where people are awake, blessing them with wealth. This night marks the peaceful conclusion of Dashain.

📖 History & Significance of Dashain

दशैं को महत्त्व — Why Dashain is Nepal's Greatest Festival

Dashain (also called Bada Dashain or Vijaya Dashami) is the longest and most celebrated festival in Nepal, observed by Hindus and many Buddhists across the country and the Nepali diaspora worldwide. The festival celebrates the victory of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura — symbolising the triumph of good over evil.

According to Hindu scripture, the Gods were troubled by the demon Mahishasura and sought the protection of Goddess Durga. She fought in her fierce forms for nine days (Navaratri) and slew the demon on the tenth day (Dashami) — hence the name Vijaya Dashami (Victory Tenth Day).

A second legend connects Dashain to the Ramayana — the day Lord Ram (an avatar of Vishnu), with Goddess Durga's blessings, defeated the demon king Ravana. Both legends converge on the same message: righteousness ultimately prevails.

Socially, Dashain is Nepal's most important family reunion time. Millions of people travel from cities back to their ancestral villages. Children fly kites, adults play cards, and the entire country takes a week-long pause from work.
