How to Convert Your Nepali Date of Birth (BS to AD) for a Passport or Visa

Updated · 6 min read

Short answer: take your date of birth exactly as printed on your citizenship certificate, enter the full year, month and day in a BS to AD converter, and use that AD date on every form. Never subtract 56 or 57 years yourself. It gives the wrong year for some dates and says nothing about the month or day.

Why you need your date of birth in AD

Your Nepali citizenship certificate shows your date of birth in Bikram Sambat (BS). Most things you do abroad use the Gregorian (AD) calendar. You will need the AD date for:

  • Your Nepali e-passport application. The online application asks for your citizenship details and your date of birth in AD.
  • Visa forms for the USA, UK, Australia, Schengen countries and others. They expect the date printed in your passport.
  • University and scholarship applications.
  • Bank KYC and remittance accounts abroad. A date that does not match your other documents can delay the account.

Your passport becomes the reference document. Once the AD date is in your passport, every later form copies it. So the conversion has to be right the first time.

How to convert your date of birth, step by step

  1. Find the BS date on your citizenship certificate. Read it from the original document or a clear photo, not from memory or an old form. Note the year, month name and day.
  2. Say the date out loud. Check the year, month and day one by one. Confirm the month name and its number, for example Kartik is month 7. Spellings differ (Asar, Ashadh, Saun, Shrawan), so go by the order of the month.
  3. Enter the full date in a BS to AD converter. Open the BS to AD converter, enter the year, month and day, and convert.
  4. Check the result with the month table below. The AD month and year should match the approximate range for your Nepali month.
  5. Write the AD date with the month name and use it everywhere. Write it like 14 April 2026, not 14/04/2026. Use the same date on your passport, visa, bank and university forms.

Why you cannot just subtract 56 or 57 years

BS runs about 56 years and 8 months ahead of AD. That is why people subtract 56 or 57. It goes wrong for two reasons.

  1. The BS year changes in mid-April, not on 1 January. The Nepali New Year (Baisakh 1) falls on 13 or 14 April. From mid-April to December the AD year is BS minus 57. From January to mid-April it is BS minus 56.
  2. Nepali months are not fixed. They run from 29 to 32 days and the lengths change from year to year. There is no formula for the month and day. Converters use a table of the true month lengths.

Example: the same BS year lands in two AD years

BS date2083 Baisakh 1 becomes14 April 2026 2083 − 57 = 2026
BS date2083 Falgun 24 becomes8 March 2027 2083 − 56 = 2027

The trap: both dates are in BS 2083, but one is in AD 2026 and the other in AD 2027. If you subtract 57 from every date, the second one comes out a full year too early.

Check your result with this month table

Use this table only to sanity-check the converter's answer. It does not replace the converter. Month starts move by a day or two each year.

Poush is the tricky one, because it runs across the AD new year. If you were born in Poush, check the exact date with the converter.

Which date to use, and how to fill in the forms

Nepali e-passport

  • The Department of Passports asks for your original citizenship certificate when you apply in Nepal.
  • If the date on your citizenship differs from your SEE or SLC certificate, and you need to use the educational date, the Department asks you to provide that certificate (or a higher-level one).
  • If there is an error in your printed passport, the Department of Passports says a new application fee must be paid. Check every character before you submit and again at enrolment.
  • If you apply from abroad, embassies such as Berlin ask for the online form and an appointment first. Check your own embassy's page for its list.

Visa, university and bank forms

  • Copy the date exactly as printed in your passport, not from your own conversion.
  • Check the order the form wants: day first or month first. Many applicants swap them.
  • If the form has a free-text field, write the month as a word (14 April 2026) so it cannot be read two ways.
  • Make sure your school certificates, transcripts and bank forms show the same AD date as your passport.

    Common mistakes to avoid

    • Subtracting 56 or 57. It can give a wrong year, and the month and day can be wrong as well.
    • Mixing up Nepali months. A wrong month can move your birthday by several weeks. Check the month name and number.
    • Swapping day and month on a foreign form.
    • Using a handwritten note or an old form as your source instead of the certificate.
    • Different AD dates on different documents. A mismatch can come back as a problem years later, for example at a visa or bank check.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I convert my Nepali date of birth to English (AD)?
