What is Bhai Tika?
Bhai Tika (also spelled Bhaitika or Vai Tika) is the festival of the sister-brother bond and the last day of Tihar, Nepal's festival of lights. Sisters apply a seven-coloured tika on their brothers' foreheads, place a garland around their necks, and offer sweets, fruits and dry fruits. Brothers give gifts or money in return. Many families also include cousins and relatives, so a man without a sister can receive tika from a cousin or an aunt.
The story behind it. In the legend, Yamuna invited her brother Yama, the god of death, applied tika on his forehead and fed him. Pleased, Yama blessed her that any brother who receives tika from his sister on this day will live a long life. The festival continues that wish.
How Bhai Tika is done
- The family prepares the puja plate with tika colours, oil, garlands, fruits, sweets and sel roti.
- The brother sits facing the sister at the sait (the tika time from the patro).
- The sister performs the rituals, often circling the brother with oil and water, and prays for his long life.
- She applies the seven-coloured tika and places the garland. Brothers then do the same for sisters in many families.
- Gifts, money and a shared meal follow, with Deusi-Bhailo singing groups visiting in the evening.
Details of the ritual and the colours used vary between communities. Newars celebrate the day as Kija Puja, and Madhesi communities as Bhardutiya.
