📖 What is Shubha Sait? — शुभ साइत के हो?

Shubha Sait — The Science of Auspicious Timing

In the Nepali Panchanga tradition, "Sait" (साइत) refers to a specific combination of Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga, Karana, and planetary positions that are considered especially auspicious for major life ceremonies. The five-element Panchanga (पञ्चाङ्ग — five limbs) forms the foundation of all Sait calculations.

The Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Samiti (NPNS) publishes the official annual Rastriya Panchangam which lists all approved Shubha Sait dates. Only dates approved by the NPNS are considered valid for official religious ceremonies. No calendar can be legally published in Nepal without the NPNS approval seal.

Why do some months have no Sait? Certain periods are traditionally restricted — Shrawan is a fasting month (Shrawan Sombar Vrat), Bhadra and Ashwin overlap with major fasting periods (Teej, Navaratri), and Kartik follows Dashain when the auspicious season has not yet resumed. Chaitra (the final month) is also traditionally restricted.

Why is Falgun always the best? During Falgun, the Sun transits through Kumbha Rashi (Aquarius) into Meen Rashi (Pisces). This transition creates a Nakshatra alignment that Panchanga scholars consistently rate as ideal for Bibaha muhurta. No major fasting festival falls in Falgun, and no Pitru Paksha overlaps with it.
